CSRA Statement on Colonialism and Donald Trump

Re: Colonialism and Donald Trump

Date: January 9th 2025

Greetings comrades.

Recently, Donald Trump has turned his attention toward “Canada”, and many of us are worried and fearful for what might happen next.

The CSRA uses the word “Canadian” in our name to describe a large geographic area. It doesn’t mean that our organization and members identify with the colonial nature of the state that is Canada. We are very aware of Indigenous issues both historical and current and attempt to be a decolonizing force within our individual communities.

If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable at the idea of Canada being forcefully absorbed into the USA, then please take a moment to imagine what happened on the lands where you live to create your current existence. Canada and the USA are colonial states – land acquiring capitalist entities that will steal and destroy the earth in the name of resource extraction.

If you find yourself suddenly feeling threatened by the talk of takeover, then consider why you are more worried about the talk of an invasion now, when the state under which you live has been invading other nations since its founding.

This doesn’t mean that we will be apathetic. There are ways to help and prepare. We will continue to legally protect our families and communities and work toward a future where our cooperative effort can allow us to thrive and take care of each other regardless of the name of the occupying state. We may be in opposition to the annexing of land by the USA, but we will never be flying the maple leaf flag.

Yours in Solidarity
